With Gratitude and Excitement: Charter Approved for Carroll Classical

Good afternoon,

My name is Megan Mann, the Secretary for Carroll Learning Alliance (CLA), the non-profit and operator for the proposed Carroll Classical Charter School. This afternoon, the Carroll County Board of Education voted unanimously to approve our charter application!

We wanted to begin by expressing our sincere gratitude and appreciation to Dr. McCabe’s office, Mr. O’Neal, our charter liaison, and all the educators within Carroll County Public Schools (CCPS) that have taken the time to meet with us, fielded our litany of questions, and been involved with the application process over the last 10 months. Thank you for your time, patience, and efforts. We would also like to thank Frederick Classical Charter School and the Maryland Alliance for Public Charter Schools, both of which have been invaluable resources offering a wealth of knowledge and support throughout the process. Finally, we would like to thank the Board for your time and consideration of our application.

Putting together a thoughtful, well-informed application while simultaneously applying to federal grants, and keeping the community informed about our efforts was no small feat and we are extremely proud of the work we have accomplished and of our vision for Carroll Classical Charter School.

Carroll Classical Charter School will offer Carroll County elementary and middle school families an opportunity to choose a rigorous classical education rooted in the time-tested Trivium—Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric, an educational framework that mirrors students’ natural development. Carroll Classical’s seven key virtues (Respect, Humility, Love, Patience, Diligence, Integrity, and Fortitude) will be the pillars upon which the school culture is formed. Exposure to foreign language at the elementary level, an on- site greenhouse, a multi-functional makerspace, and outdoor classrooms that enhance exploration, innovation, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world are just a few things we are excited to bring to fruition.

In a few short months, the concept of Carroll Classical has garnered the interest of over 360 families, representing 519 prospective students. That’s just the beginning. The strong community support underscores the demand for additional educational options.

Students, Educators, Families, and the Community are all parts of the whole, a collaborative circle if you will. Carroll Classical endeavors to support, empower, invest, and strengthen that collaborative circle. Now that we have an approved application, CLA looks forward to the opportunity to operate in partnership with CCPS to provide a high-quality, innovative education available to all members of the community.

On behalf of Carroll Learning Alliance, thank you.

Regards,

Megan Mann
